About the debate
Last night I went to DC to see Gov. Dean. During his talk he made a very insightful point. He said (and I paraphrase) that even though most polls show Kerry and Bush in a dead heat, Bush's unfavorables are so high, people are just waiting to kick him out of office. That many people don't make up their minds two months, two weeks, nor two days before walking into the voting booth. They make up their minds IN the voting booth.
All Kerry has to do, in the debates, and beyond them is to show he's not a scary choice. He doesn't have to crush Bush in the debates, just show that he's "presidential" and worth their vote.
Bush's unfavorables already show many people want to fire his lame ass. Kerry just has to show he's a better alternative.
I think he went a long way in doing just that tonight.

Taking aim at Bush, Ehrlich
Maryland's liberal Democrats plan a conference in October to plot ways to unseat the president and governor.

MARYLAND Republicans are strategizing in New York this week about how to re-elect President Bush this fall and Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. in 2006.
Meanwhile, Maryland Democrats are at home, plotting the opposite.
A group of liberal Democrats is organizing the Maryland Progressive Summit, scheduled for Oct. 2 in Columbia.
Del. Peter Franchot of Montgomery County, one of the organizers, said he hopes to capitalize on Democrats' anger toward Bush this year and channel it toward the governor two years hence.
Featured speakers will include Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley and Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan.
Topics for the summit: "How George Bush and Robert Ehrlich are Ruining Maryland's Environment," "How George Bush and Robert Ehrlich are Underfunding Education and Leaving Children Behind," and "How George Bush and Robert Ehrlich are Reducing Investments in Our Future."

Vigil for Democracy and Rally for a Paper Audit Trail
Anyone interested in the paperless voting issue, please try to attend this event, and forward the info to anyone else you can think of! If you're interested in attending and would like to carpool with other DFH folks, please leave a note in the "Comments" to this entry (click on "Comments" below).
Unfortunately, the judge ruled against TrueVoteMD in the lawsuit attempting to require a paper trail in November, but all hope is not lost. The Maryland Court of Appeals has agreed to hear the appeal on an expedited basis. The hearing will be on September 14, 2004 -- more details to follow. But in the meantime, please try to attend the event described below.
Vigil for Democracy
&
Rally for a Paper Audit Trail
at
State Board of Elections Monthly Meeting
Thursday, September 9th
12:30pm
151 West Street, Annapolis, MD
For the 4th month in a row, the Campaign for Verifiable Voting will hold our monthly Vigil for Democracy at the monthly meeting of the State Board of Elections. We will be rallying to restore integrity to our election system by calling on the Board to allow all voters to verify the accurate recording of their ballot choices and to enable a viable recount and audit of the electronic voting machine tallies. Without a voter-verified paper audit trail, all elections in Maryland will be tainted and the accuracy of results will be questionable. This type of voting system is unacceptable in a real democracy.
Help us have a good presence on September 9th. There should be considerable press coverage of this Board meeting because of the impending firing of Administrator Linda Lamone.

Voter Registration Help Request
Howard Community College HCC has 6000 full time students and
13, 000 who attend part time. They are very supportive of voter registration and give new students (about 1000 a semester) a voter registration form in their orientation packets.
We still need help staffing the following Howard Community College voter registration dates:
Saturday, October 2nd from 10 am to 12 noon.
October 4, 5, 6 and 7 (M,T,W,TH) from 5:30 to 8 pm.
We are also doing a day schedule, but believe we will have that covered.
All the HCC events will be in the Burrill Galleria. HCC will provide a table and chairs. Please bring table signs, forms, pens, voting brochures, etc. as for any voter registration event.
To sign up to staff the events please contact: David Osmundson

Meetup Tonight at Elkridge Library!
We are very lucky to have Delegate Liz Bobo as a guest speaker. Please try to attend, and invite anyone else you think would be interested – particularly when we have a guest speaker, we really want to have a good turnout!
Also, as we get closer and closer to the November election, we need “all hands on deck,” so you’ll want to be there to find out about some of the events and volunteer opportunities we have coming up.
And if that isn’t enough to entice you, there will also be pizza! (Due to the strenght of attendence we will be passing the "hat" around for people to chip in- Thanks.) It’s not absolutely necessary to RSVP, but it would be helpful, so we know how many pizzas we’ll need. RSVP at http://dfa.meetup.com, or you can also reply to this email.
The Elkridge library is easy to get to – it’s right on Route 1. Coming from Columbia, you’ll take Route 100 East to Route 1 North (exit 6B). The library will be on your left, about a mile and a half (I’m guess-timating) after you get onto Route 1.
